Day Trips from Guanacaste

  • Playas del Coco - located just 45 minutes from Tamarindo and 30 minutes from the famous Papagayo Peninsula. It offers a walking pier with sand volleyball courts, skating park, basketball courts and a lot of sitting spots from which you can watch the tranquil ocean. You can also find a variety of restaurants right on the beach as well as many souvenir shops. It is also a hub for a variety of half day and full day tours, including: snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, zip line, animal sanctuary, ATV’s and more.

  • Parque Nacional Santa Rosa - Santa Rosa National Park is 45 minutes away from Liberia City. It offers a museum of natural history called La Casona. They also offer guided walking trail tours. This park is famous for their variety of birds, small mammals and pristine surfing beaches. Santa Rosa national park also plays an important role in big cat conservation as it forms part of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor for jaguars and pumas.

  • Rincón de la Vieja National Park - As well as being a national park, it is also home to the volcano of its same name: Rincon de la Vieja. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday to the public and offers a variety of adventures. There are several hiking trails to get to the inactive crater, as well as fumaroles and hot springs. It is a paradise to see wildlife and get to experience an outdoors adventure.

  • Llanos Del Cortez Waterfall - Located 30 minutes of the outskirts of Liberia, this is a prime spot to visit. It offers easy access through the highway and it takes just one easy 10-minute hike to the main spot. Enjoy a 15m-high and 12m-wide waterfall in the middle of the dry forest. But be advised, there is no jumping allowed due to the fact that the pond is not deep enough.

  • Barra Honda National Park - Featuring an extensive network of hiking trails, this is a great place for wildlife sightseeing, but what makes this park special are the caves. Only one of the 19 caves is open to the public but it makes for an out of world experience. Descend 20 meters to start your cave exploration and if you are brave enough, dare to turn off your lamp light.

  • Ostional Wildlife Refuge - Ostional is known for its famous turtle hatching season. From July to November thousands of turtles will make arrivals from 3 to 7 days to lay million off eggs. The access to the beach is restricted during this time, and the only way to access the beach is with guides from the refuge. If you find yourself there from December to June, you can still access the beach at your pleasure. It is a great place to see a variety of flora and fauna.

  • Diamante Eco Adventure Park – this is a great “all-in-one” stop for adventure activities and viewing wildlife in a museum/refuge type setting. Located in Guanacaste, Diamante’s convenient oceanfront location offers the most unique and exciting Zip Line course featuring the longest dual-line in the country. Diamante is also home to a renowned Animal Sanctuary, built in partnership with La Paz Waterfall Gardens.
